Drawing I Midterm

I know I’ve been away lately, but I’ll be back as soon as my mid-terms are over. I have a ton of work to do and I can’t get a break. I didn’t even get to celebrate my birthday.

Oct. 15th just incase you were wondering šŸ˜‰

Between school, baby, house, and both blogs, forgive me if I put something on the back-burn for a little while.

Believe me you are all always on my mind.

I’ve been annoying everyone by taking video’s and pictures of everything I’m working on for you to see!

My Drawing One Mid-term is in an hour, and I’m so nervous. I have 22 drawings –some HW, some process, and some class work– to show my professors.

Here are some of my Midterm drawings,

Presentations…we love to hate them!

Presentations, we love to hate them…

No one likes all eyes to be on them, unless you’re an entertainer, then it’s your job!

I’ve had my fair share of presentations to do. In my long lived five years spent presenting Architectural projects I’ve had plenty of experience, not to mention speech class and all the other classes that assigned some type of project.

Don’t get me wrong, that doesn’t mean I’m excellent at them. I just know a thing or two about the basics of a successful design presentation.

The most important thing to do –which goes without saying but no one seems to do– is:

Presenting my Shape Project

Introduce Yourself

It’s easy.

Here, repeat after me…

“My name is_______.”

in the blank would be my name, Hiba.

For some reason people/students assume that we know their name, or maybe they’re trying to remain un-noticed and easily forgotten by not introducing themselves.

Well, mission accomplished because no matter how great your work and your presentation is, if I can’t attach a name to it then it’s not that important and I will forget it.

But let’s think about it for a second. Is this what we want people to do.

Forget about us?

No. I –at least– want to be remembered by each and everyone of you.

So remember my name –I usually have to spell it for you– H I B A, Hiba!

I noticed that I could be talking to people for hours, be in the same class with them for a whole semester, and have multiple classes with the same people and I still don’t know their names.

Not because I forgot their names, but because they haven’t introduced themselves to me.

So, I try my best to introduce myself to whomever I talk to.

Our names are given to us for a reason so we should embrace them!

just incase you forgot, it’s Hiba!

In a presentation it’s okay to:

My Crowd

Be NervousĀ

You’re only human.

No one, no one (again, for emphasis) stands in front of a big/small crowd and isn’t nervous.

It’s okay.

let the crowd know that you’re nervous. Believe me, you’ll find that your nervousness has disappeared when the words left your lips.

Now, for the Five most important things you should/not do in an Artistic Presentation:

I really hope I’ve helped.

Value with Penrose

For my third 2D design project –The Value Project– we were asked to choose three consecutive images from a motion picture that shows some type of transition. This project is a gray scale project that will help us understand the light values within the images.

The first movie that came to mind when we were assigned this project was Inception, starring Leonardo Dicaprio. Not only is the idea of the movie so mind opening, the visual manipulations were very inspiring.

At first, I wanted my three consecutive images to be of Leonardo’s character (Cobb) is totem twisting then falling on it’s side. When I finally found the scene, I wasn’t so impressed with the light value and the composition of the images. It felt plane and flat.

I knew that I wanted my scenes to be from this movie in particular because it’s full of conceptual brain teasers, so I kept searching. I finally found an interesting scene, it was about the Penrose Endless StairwayĀ also known in the movie as the Paradox.

In the scene below, Joseph Gordon’s character (Arthur) is teaching Ellen Page’s character (Ariaden) how to manipulate the principles of architecture within the dream world.

In class we talked about the importance of having the audience linger within our art piece. To have them not only pass by our work, but actually stop and try to analyze and understand our piece. What I was trying to accomplish when picking my images, is to have the viewer stop and ask question about my piece. This way we could have a conversation going.

These are my images:

In College Forever

A common question I get since I’ve gone back in school is:

“What are you?”

*Stares blankly* Umm…What?

What year are you?

Click to read her story! It's never too late...

Ohh…umm, I don’t know! I’ve been in school forever! A junior I guess…

Really? How old are you?

*annoyed* umm, 23!

Wow your old…

*blinks twice*

*walk away*

No, they’re not that rude but I always find myself in the same situation. I always have to explain why I’m still in school, and whyĀ I don’t have a B.A after studying Architecture for five years.

I’m an “A” student so it’s not my grades.

It’s actually the result of moving from one country to another and the school requirement. It’s the fact that each Architecture program has it’s own requirements, and is only limited to a certain amount of students.

It’s the fact that I didn’t want to wait until I was 27 to have my first baby –who’s 16 months now :).

Life just got in the way.Ā I got bit in the tosh by the american educational system, but you win some you lose some. In my case I’m hoping to win it all.

I’ve gone through a point where I was frustrated, but it was my motivation to work hard so I could finish soon.

Most people would have quit by now, but quitting was never one of my traits.

How long have you been in school? What obstacles have you had to come by? Did you take some time off?
